Jack L. Chalker

Jack Laurence Chalker ( born December 17, 1944 in Baltimore, † February 11, 2005 ) was an American science fiction author.

Life

Chalker visited the Baltimore City Public School, the Townson State College and graduated from Johns Hopkins University in History and English from. He then taught history, geography and English at various high schools in Baltimore and was a lecturer in science fiction at several universities. He founded the publishing Mirage Press Ltd. and worked as a sound engineer, typographer, bookseller and a teacher.

During the Vietnam War Chalker was stationed from 1968 to 1971 in Special Forces in the U.S., but never took part in combat operations. Since 1978, Chalker was a freelance writer.

In the same year he married Eva C. Whitley. From this marriage two sons were born. Chalker was three times treasurer of the Science Fiction Writers of America ( SFWA ). He lived and worked in Baltimore, Maryland.
