Jack Lewis, Baron Lewis of Newnham

Jack Lewis, Baron Lewis of Newnham, FRS ( born February 13, 1928) is an English chemist working mainly in the field of transition metals.

He graduated in 1949 with a bachelor's degree in chemistry at the University of London, earned a Ph.D. at the University of Nottingham. From 1953 he was a lecturer at the University of Sheffield before returning to London in 1956 and taught as a lecturer at Imperial College London. He was from 1961 to 1967 as a professor at the University of Manchester, 1967 to 1970 at the University College London and from 1970 to 1995 at the University of Cambridge. He was head of Robinson College, the youngest colleges in Cambridge after its founding in 2001.

In 1973 he was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Society, the Royal Society awarded him the Davy Medal in 1985 and 2004, the Royal Medal.

In 1982 he was knighted and raised 1989 Baron Lewis of Newnham. He sits in the House of Lords as a cross Bencher and is on several committees for science and technology. 1995 awarded him the University of Bath honorary doctorate.

In 1951 he married Elfreida Lamb. They have a son and a daughter.
