Jack Markell

Jack A. Markell (* November 26, 1960 in Newark, Delaware) is an American politician. Since 20 January 2009, he is the Governor of the State of Delaware.

Early years

Jack Markell first attended the Newark High School and then studied at Brown University in Providence sector and economic development. He then continued his studies at the University of Chicago. After his studies, he became a successful businessman. He helped build the company Nextel. In Chicago, he worked in banking. He was also a consultant to the firm McKinsey and Company and the board of Comcast Corporation.

Political rise

Markell is a member of the Democratic Party. In 1998 he was elected against the Republican incumbent Janet C. Rzewnicki of Finance of the State of Delaware. In 2002 and 2006 he was confirmed in each case in this office. Prior to the gubernatorial elections of 2008 he succeeded in securing his party's nomination for top candidates. On 4 November 2008 he won at the actual elections with 67.5 % of the vote against William Lee, the candidate of the Republican Party. This election victory is related to the general political upheaval in the United States, which was reflected as President, especially in the election of Barack Obama. Markell was elected on the same day as Obama and introduced to his new office also on the same day, January 20, 2009. With his wife Carla Governor Markell has two children.
