Jack Solomon (sound engineer)

Jack Solomon ( born March 8, 1913 in Manhattan, New York City, New York, † November 8, 2002 in Los Angeles, California ) was an American sound engineer who won an Oscar for Best Sound and five more times for these Oscar and was nominated for an Emmy.

Life

Solomon began his career as a sound engineer in the film industry in 1953 at the Hollywood directed by W. Lee Wilder science fiction film Phantom from Space and worked throughout his career in the production of over 100 films.

At the Academy Awards in 1970 Solomon won jointly with Murray Spivack the Oscar for best sound, specifically for the musical film Hello, Dolly! (1969 ) Gene Kelly with Barbra Streisand, Walter Matthau and Michael Crawford in the lead roles.

In the following years he has been nominated a further five times for an Oscar in this category: The Academy Awards 1972, he got together with Richard Portman nominated for the sound in the film comedy Grandpa 's can not leave ( other title: Grandpa Kotch - Full steam from the impasse, 1971) by Jack Lemmon Walter Matthau, Deborah Winters and Felicia Farr. The next nomination was followed in 1976 with Richard Portman, Don MacDougall and Curly Thirlwell for the movie Funny Lady (1975 ), the film director Herbert Ross with Barbra Streisand, James Caan and Omar Sharif staged.

At the Academy Awards in 1977 Solomon was with Harry W. Tetrick, William L. McCaughey and Aaron Rochin for an Oscar in the category Best Sound in the adventure, horror and fantasy movie King Kong ( 1976) by John Guillermin with Jeff Bridges, Jessica Lange and Charles Grodin nominated. Another Academy Award nomination in this category in 1979 with Robert Knudson, Robert J. Glass and Don MacDougall for film comedy Hooper ( Hooper, 1978) by Hal Needham Burt Reynolds, Sally Field and Jan -Michael Vincent in the lead roles.

His last nomination for an Oscar for best sound got Solomon at the Oscar ceremony in 1980 with William L. McCaughey, Aaron Rochin and Michael J. Kohut for the science fiction film Meteor (1979 ) by Ronald Neame, starring Sean Connery, Natalie Wood and Karl Malden as the main character.

At the Emmy Awards in 1980, he was also with David Dockendorf, Robert L. Harman and William L. McCaughey nominated outstanding contributions in the re-recording for an Emmy in the category, namely for the pilot and another episode from the NBC produced television series Skag (1980).
