Jack Straw
John Whitaker "Jack" Straw ( born August 3, 1946 in Buckhurst Hill, Essex ) is a British Labour Party politician. From June 2007 to May 2010 he was Lord Chancellor and Minister of Justice in the government of Gordon Brown.
Straw is since 1979 a deputy in the lower house for the constituency of Blackburn and was from 1997 to 2001 and Minister of the Interior from 2001 to 2006 Minister of Foreign Affairs in the government of Tony Blair. From May 2006 to June 2007, it was party leader in the House, and the same Lord Privy Seal ( Lord Privy Seal), is more representative position with Cabinet rank.
Life
John Whitaker Straw was born in 1946 in Essex, where he lived in a council flat with his single mother. After graduating from a private school in Brentwood, he was able to attend thanks to a scholarship, he studied at the University of Leeds Jura. During his school days he was nicknamed Jack get under which he became known. With the election as President of the local fraternity began his political career. Already in the following year he was president of the National Student Association. He was at this time as extremist and fell to the Minister for Health and Social Security Barbara Castle, which hired him in 1974 as a consultant.
In 1977, he spoke out against a coalition of the Labour Party with the Liberal Democrats and then gave his consultancy work on. However, two years later, he successfully ran to succeed Barbara Castle for the lower house. Once Labour had lost the election, he became opposition spokesman on economic affairs. In the 1980s and 1990s, he was successively educational, environmental ministers in the Labour shadow cabinet. During this time he was instrumental in the reorganization of the party, as New Labour moved into the election campaign in 1997.
After following election of the Labour Party, he was interior minister under Tony Blair. During his tenure, the anti -terror laws were tightened and strengthened the rights of the police towards suspects. At the same time, the European Convention on Human Rights also points to his initiative, taken in British law and strengthened the struggle against racism in the police service.
After the re- election of the Labour Party in 2001, he was surprisingly appointed as successor by Robin Cook as Foreign Minister after he was actually for the office of Minister of Transport in the conversation. Special attention was paid to his efforts, Libya to the West to open. In addition, he initiated the negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program, which leads the UK, along with Germany and France. After the third victory in a row, in the general election on 5 May 2005, Jack Straw held to continue the post of foreign minister. After a bitter defeat for Labour in the British local elections on 5 May 2006 Straw was sacked following a reshuffle of Prime Minister Tony Blair as Foreign Minister and with the more prestigious cabinet post of Lord Privy Seal (Lord Privy Seal ) and the Chairman of the Group in the House (Leader of the House of Commons ) considered. The succession of Straw in the Foreign Office took the former Environment Minister Margaret Beckett. From June 2007 to May 2010 officiated Jack Straw as Lord Chancellor and Minister of Justice. After losing general election 2010 Straw announced not to run again for office in the upcoming Congress of the Labour Party and is thus eliminated from the shadow cabinet.
In January 2011, Straw made the statement that there is in England a problem with Pakistani men, white young women would consider easy victims for rape, for a controversy.
