Jack van Lint

Hendricus Jacobus van Lint ( aka Jack van Lint, born September 1, 1932 in Bandung on Java, † 28 September 2004 in Nuenen ) was a Dutch mathematician who worked on number theory and combinatorics.

Life and work

Van Lint went to 1942 in Batavia to school and then in Jackson (Missouri ), Chicago, Bundaberg in Australia, Arnhem and Zwolle. From 1950 he studied at the Utrecht University, where he received his diploma in 1955 and 1957 at Frederik van der Blij doctorate ( Hecke operator and Euler Products) was. In between, he was 1956/1957 at the Universities of Göttingen and Münster. 1952 to 1956 he was an assistant at the Mathematical Institute in Utrecht, 1957 to 1959 at the Dutch Research Society and from 1959 to 1997 professor at the Technical University of Eindhoven, where he was rector from 1991 to 1996. After that, he was a professor emeritus.

Van Lint is mainly known for his contributions to coding theory.

1966, 1971 and 1977 he was a visiting scientist at Bell Telephone Laboratories, as well as 1970/1971, 1982/1983, 1988/1989 and 2000 Visiting Professor at Caltech. Since 1985 he has been a consultant to the Philips Research Laboratories.

He was married in 1961 and had two children.

He was inducted into the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences in 1972, In 1997 he received the Euler Medal. In 1983 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM ) (Partial geometries ). He was made an honorary Doctor of universities of Bergen, Bucharest and Gent. He was an honorary member of the Dutch Mathematical Society and in 1993 Knight of the Order of the Netherlands Lion.
