Jack Walrath

Jack Walrath Arthur Junior ( born May 5, 1946 in Stuart ( Florida)) is an American jazz trumpeter and arranger.

Life and work

Walrath began playing trumpet at the age of nine years. Between 1964 and 1968 he studied at the Berklee College. During this time, he occasionally played with Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Clark Terry, Sam Rivers, Freddie Hubbard and Miroslav Vitouš. In 1968 he went with the fusion band Change on tour. He also played in Motown Orchestra and Latin bands. Between 1969 and 1971 he led the group with Glenn Ferris Revival; then he played with Ray Charles and founded his own quintet. In 1973 he played with Paul Jeffrey, so I can work until 1978 in the band of Charles Mingus. Then he headed back his own band, played in the John Scofield and Jim McNeely. In the 1980s, he worked again with Glenn Ferris together, but also with Dannie Richmond and the Mingus Dynasty, which he headed from 1989. In addition, he founded his Masters of Suspense ( for his eponymous album of 1987, he was nominated for a Grammy ).

Walrath was also at some plates of the Mingus Big Band (since 1993) and participated in Gunther Schuller's recording of Epitaph and has performed with Sam Rivers, Joe Morello, Charlie Persip, Mal Waldron, Carlos Ward, Kenny Garrett and Ricky Ford. He later played with the George Gruntz Concert Band from, but also with the New York Jazz Composers Orchestra, Bobby Watson, Benny Green, Larry Coryell and the WDR Big Band Cologne. In addition, he has also worked for Lou Rawls, Muhal Richard Abrams, Pee Wee Ellis, Gerry Mulligan, John Hicks, Hamiet Bluiett, Cecil Brooks III, Ray Anderson and the Upper Austrian Jazz Orchestra. With Miles Davis and the orchestra by Quincy Jones, he played at the Montreux Jazz Festival.
