Jack Wiebe

John Edward Neil ( "Jack" ) Wiebe, SOM ( born May 31, 1936 in Herbert, Saskatchewan, † 16 April 2007) was a Canadian politician and farmer. From 1994 to 2000 he was Vice- Governor of the Province of Saskatchewan, then to 2004, Senator.

Biography

Wiebe was the descendant of German - Russian Mennonites; both his grandfather and his father had been mayor of the town Herbert. He studied agricultural science at the University of Saskatchewan and built after the completion of a large farm on. In addition, he was from 1970 to 1985 Owner and Managing Director of the feed factory L & W Feeders Ltd.. As a candidate of the Saskatchewan Liberal Party Wiebe 1971 was successful in a by-election and represented in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan electoral district Morse. After he was re-elected in 1975, he resigned in 1978.

Governor General Ray Hnatyshyn sworn Wiebe on 31 May 1994 as Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan. This representative office he held until February 21, 2000. A few weeks later, on 6 April 2000, he was appointed Senator by Prime Minister Jean Chrétien. In the Senate, Wiebe was vice chairman of the Agricultural and Forestry Commission. On 31 January 2004, he resigned. In the following years he led a fundraising campaign to equip a new Regional Hospital in Swift Current.
