Jackie Pretorius

Jacobus "Jackie " Pretorius ( born November 22, 1934 in Potchefstroom, † March 30, 2009 in Johannesburg) was a South African racing driver.

Jackie Pretorius was one of the top drivers in the South African single-seater championship in the 1960s. In 1966, he was ninth on a lotus in the World Cup not to be counted in this year's Grand Prix of South Africa. Between 1968 and 1970, he enjoyed success with seaters and sports cars from Lola.

His debut in the Formula 1 World Championship he gave in 1968 at Kyalami. The Brabham BT11 of Pretoria team he came up with a backlog of 10 rounds on the winner Jim Clark to the finish and was not classified. Also, 1971 and 1973 was Pretorious the Grand Prix of South Africa at the start. In 1973, he took over a factory cars of Frank Williams, after his regular driver Nanni Galli had difficult injured during a test drive. In both races, he was forced to retire due to technical defects the race before the checkered flag.

His best year in the championship in his home country he had in 1971 when he won two races for the team Gunston.

About three weeks before his death had been admitted Pretorius after a robbery at a hospital. He had suffered serious injuries that led to a result in a heart attack, to which he succumbed. About five years earlier, he had been in a similar raid seriously injured before, while his wife Shirley had lost their lives in this attack.
