History

The Jackson County was formed on November 5, 1829 from parts of Independence County. It was named (1829-1837) by Andrew Jackson (1767-1845), the seventh President of the United States.

The district capital has changed five times. Specifically, these were: Litchfield (1831 ), Elizabeth (1839 ), Augusta (1852 ), Port Jackson (1854 ) and Newport from 1892.

Since there were no independent municipalities or cities at the time of formation of the county, the first county seat was established in the house of the early pioneer Thomas Wideman. The house was almost centrally in the county. 1832 moved to 3 km away and newly built Litchfield what the first permanent settlement represented. Was named the place after Thomas Litchfield, a former member of the General Assembly of the Independence County.

In 1836, the first ferry across the Black River by Robert Dunbar was put into operation.
