Jackson County (Georgia)

The Jackson County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Jefferson, which was named after President Thomas Jefferson.

Geography

The County is located in north-central Georgia, is located in the northeast about 70 miles from South Carolina and has an area of 888 square kilometers, of which two square kilometers of water surface, and borders clockwise to the following counties: Banks County, Madison County, Clarke County, Barrow County and Hall County.

History

Jackson County was formed as the 22nd county in Georgia from portions of Franklin County on February 11, 1796. It was named for James Jackson, a general in the Revolutionary War, Congress Member and Senator.

The Jackson County Courthouse was built in 1879 and is an example of the neoclassical architecture at that time. The clock tower was added in 1906. In 1978 the building was completely renovated.

The average age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 100.4 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.8 males.

The median income for a household was $ 40,349, and the median income for a family $ 46,211. Males had a median income of $ 34,063, women $ 22,774. The per capita income was $ 17,808. 9.9 percent of families and 12.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
