Jackson County (Kansas)
Jackson County is a county located in the state of Kansas in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Holton.
Geography
The County is located in northeast Kansas, in the north about 40 miles from Nebraska, in the east about 50 km of Missouri and has an area of 1704 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Brown County, Atchison County, Jefferson County, Shawnee County, Pottawatomie County and Nemaha County.
History
Jackson County was formed on 11 February 1859. It was named after Andrew Jackson, the seventh U.S. president.

According to the census in 2000, lived in Jackson County 12 657 people in 4,727 households, and 3,507 families in Jackson County. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 90.21 percent White, 0.53 percent African American, 6.84 percent Native American, 0.17 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.39 percent from other races groups; 1.84 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.49 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 4,727 households out of which 35.2 percent of children under 18 who lived with them. 62.3 percent were married couples living together, 8.2 percent were single mothers and 25.8 percent were non-families. 22.7 percent of all households were single-person households and 11.5 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.09.
28.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 6.8 percent 18 to 24 years 26.7 percent between 25 and 44, 23.4 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 14.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 96.8 males. For every 100 adult women 18 years and older 93.8 males.
The median income for a household was $ 40,451, and the median income for a family was $ 46,520. Males have a median income of $ 32,195, women $ 22,305. The per capita income was $ 18,606. 6.4 percent of families and 8.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
