Jackson County (Kentucky)
Jackson County is a county located in the state of Kentucky in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is McKee. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.
Geography
The County is located in east-central Kentucky, is in the south about 80 miles from Tennessee, located in the southeast about 90 miles from Virginia and has an area of 898 square kilometers, of which one square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Estill County, Lee County, Owsley County, Clay County, Laurel County, Rockcastle County and Madison County.
History
Jackson County was formed on February 2, 1858 from parts of Clay County, Estill County, Laurel County, Madison County, Owsley County and Rockcastle County. It was named after President Andrew Jackson.

According to the census in 2000, lived in Jackson County 13,495 people in 5,307 households and 3,953 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 99.17 percent White, 0.05 percent African American, 0.19 percent Native American, 0.01 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.04 percent from other races groups; 0.52 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.53 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 5,307 households out of which 35.5 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 60.2 percent were married couples living together, 10.3 percent were single mothers, 25.5 percent were non-families, 23.0 percent of all households and 9.3 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 2.96.
Based on the county the population was spread from 26.1 percent population under 18 years, 9.8 percent between 18 and 24 years, 29.4 percent between 25 and 44 years, 22.9 percent between 45 and 64 years and 11.8 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females aged 18 years old or over, there were 95.2 men statistically.
The median income for a household was $ 20,177, and the median income for a family was $ 23,638. Males have a median income of $ 25,087, women $ 16,065. The per capita income was $ 10,711. 25.8 percent of families and 30.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 36.5 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 24.1 percent of those 65 years.
