Jackson County (Michigan)
Jackson County is a county located in the state of Michigan in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Jackson.
Geography
The County is located in the south of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, is in the south and south-west about 50 miles from Ohio and Indiana, in the southeast about 75 km from Lake Erie, one of the five Great Lakes, away and has an area of 1875 square kilometers, of which 44 square kilometers water surface are. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Livingston County, Washtenaw County, Lenawee County, Hillsdale County, Calhoun County, Eaton County and Ingham County.
History
Jackson County was formed in 1832 from parts of Washtenaw County and free territory. It was named after Andrew Jackson, the seventh U.S. president.
The county is one of the so-called Cabinet counties since it was like some other named after a member of the Cabinet of President Andrew Jackson.

According to the census in 2000, lived in Jackson County 158 422 people in 58 168 households and 40 833 families. The population density was 87 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 88.54 percent White, 7.92 percent African American, 0.40 percent Native American, 0.53 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.83 percent from other races groups; 1.74 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.20 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 58 168 households out of which 33.5 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them. 53.8 percent were married couples living together, 12.0 percent were single mothers and 29.8 percent were non-families. 24.6 percent of all households and 9.6 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.03.
25.6 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 8.1 percent 18 to 24 years 30.4 percent between 25 and 44, 23.0 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 12.9 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 104.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were statistically 103.7 males.
The median income for a household was $ 43,171, and the median income for a family $ 50,970. Males had a median income of $ 38,919, women $ 26,448. The per capita income was $ 20,171. 6.5 percent of families and 9.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
