Jackson County (Mississippi)

The Jackson County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Pascagoula, which was named after flowing in this area Pascagoula River.

The County is located in the extreme southeast of Mississippi, bounded on the south by the Gulf of Mexico, on the east by Alabama, and has an area of 2702 square kilometers, of which 819 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered by the following counties:

History

The Jackson County was formed on December 18, 1812 the Mobile District. It was named after Andrew Jackson (1767-1845), the seventh President of the United States.

According to the census in 2000, lived in Jackson County 131 420 people in 47 676 households and 35 709 families. The population density was 70 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 75.35 percent White, 20.87 percent Black or African American, 0.33 percent Native American, 1.57 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.72 percent from other races groups; 1.12 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.14 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race, were members of the various groups mentioned.

Of the 47 676 households out of which 37.0 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.7 percent were married couples living together, 14.5 percent were single mothers and 25.1 percent were non-families. 20.8 percent of all households were single-person households and 7.1 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size of 3.14 persons.

27.7 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 9.3 percent between 18 to 24, 29.8 percent between 25 and 44, 22.9 percent between 45 and 64 years old and 10.3 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 98.2 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.9 males.

The average income of a household was $ 39,118, for a family is $ 45,091. Males had a median income of $ 32,996, women $ 22,770. The per capita income was $ 17,768. Approximately 10.5 percent of families and 12.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
