Jackson County (Oklahoma)
The Jackson County is a county located in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Altus.
Geography
The County is located in southwestern Oklahoma, in the south as Texas and has an area of 2083 square kilometers, of which 4 square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Greer County, Kiowa County, Tillman County, Wilbarger County ( Texas), Hardeman County ( Texas) and Harmon County.
History
Jackson County was formed on July 16, 1907 from parts of Greer County and the Oklahoma territory. It was named after Thomas Jonathan Jackson, a general in the Confederate States of America.

According to the census in 2000, lived in Jackson County 28,439 people in 10,590 households and 7,667 families. The population density was 14 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 76.14 percent White, 8.03 percent African American, 1.74 percent Native American, 1.16 percent Asian, 0.17 percent Pacific Islander residents from the 9.34 percent from other races, and groups; 3.42 percent were descended from two or more races. 15.63 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 10,590 households, 38.1 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 57.8 percent were married couples living together, 10.7 percent were single mothers. 27.6 percent were non-families, 24.2 percent of all households and 9.7 percent of households had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 3.11 persons.
29.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 10.3 percent between 18 to 24, 29.0 percent between 25 and 44, 19.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 11.9 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 99.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.8 males.
The median income for a household was $ 30,737, and the median income for a family was $ 38,265. Males had a median income of $ 28,240 versus $ 19,215 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,454. 13.6 percent of families and 16.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
