Jacksonville is a city in Cherokee County in the U.S. state of Texas.

Geography

The city is located on Interstate 69 in the northeast of the county in east-central Texas and has a total area of 36.6 km ² without significant water surface.

History

The first settlement began in 1847 on the east bank of the Gum Creek. Jackson Smith built a house here and a forge and a year later was also postmaster of the Gum Creek Post Office. Through him and another settler named Jackson the name Jacksonville for the town was formed in 1850., The International -Great Northern Railroad moved in 1872 tracks a few kilometers away and in the same year laid most of the population residing in the vicinity of the railway line and took the place name.
