Jacksonville is a city in Cherokee County in the U.S. state of Texas.

Geography

The city is located on Interstate 69 in the northeast of the county in east-central Texas and has a total area of 36.6 km ² without significant water surface.

History

The first settlement began in 1847 on the east bank of the Gum Creek. Jackson Smith built a house here and a forge and a year later was also postmaster of the Gum Creek Post Office. Through him and another settler named Jackson the name Jacksonville for the town was formed in 1850., The International -Great Northern Railroad moved in 1872 tracks a few kilometers away and in the same year laid most of the population residing in the vicinity of the railway line and took the place name.

The average household size was 2.71 and the average family size was 3.28 persons to.

29.2% of the population were under 18 years old, 12.1% from 18 to 24, 25.2% 25-44, 17.9% from 45 to 64, and 15.5 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 31 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 89.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 83.8 males.

The median income for a household was $ 25,800, and the median income for a family $ 31,176. Males had a median income of $ 23,650 versus $ 19,375 for females.
