Jacob-Baart de la Faille

Jacob Baart de la Faille ( born June 1, 1886 in Leeuwarden, † 1959 ) was a Belgian- Dutch art historian and jurist.

De la Faille was a son of the Dutchman Cornelis Baart de la Faille and the Belgian Henriette Adriana Krayenhoff. He studied law in Utrecht and received his doctorate in 1913.

De la Faille created the first catalog of the works of Vincent van Gogh and published it in 1928 for the first time. Shortly thereafter, de la Faille was involved in a spectacular fight for the Berlin art dealer Otto Wacker (1898-1970), when he certified about 30 offered by Wacker fakes as genuine works of Van Gogh.

In addition to the recent Van Gogh Catalogue January Hulskers is de la Failles cataloging is still a standard work. In his enumeration of image descriptions is marked with the symbol " F".
