Jacob Best

Johann Jacob Best ( born May 1, 1786 in Mettenheim, † February 26, 1861 in Milwaukee ) was a German businessman and brewer. He was the founder of Best and Company, which became known as the Pabst Brewing Company later.

Biography

Jacob Best learned in Mettenheim the brewing trade and opened a brewery, which he ran until his emigration in 1844 there. His parents were Johann Lorentz Best (* March 29, 1759 Schornsheim ) ∞ May 13th, 1783 in Mettenheim Eva Maria Zatzmann (* March 9, 1752 Mette home ). Emigrated in 1842 his sons Jacob Best, Jr. and Charles in the United States and settled in Kilbourntown, one of Milwaukee's first settlements down. There they founded the Empire Brewery.

Best followed with his two sons, Phillip and Charles in 1844. Together ran the family the Empire Brewery, which in Best and Company ( Best and Sons also ) was renamed soon. The brewery was located on the Chestnut Street. In addition to beer, the family also made whiskey and vinegar ago. In order to meet the increasing demand for beer, they got out of the whiskey and vinegar business.

In 1850 the sons Charles and Lawrence left the family business and founded their own brewery, which later became known as Miller Brewing Company Plank Road Brewery.

Best went in 1853 to retire and handed over the management of the brewery to his son Phillip. This named the brewery six years later to Phillip Best Brewing Company.

In his retirement is best operated as a local politician. He worked among other things as school commissioner.

Best Jacob died in 1861. He is on the Forest Home Cemetery in Milwaukee buried.

Jacob Best was with Eva Maria Schmidt (* 1792 Mette home; † Milwaukee ) married. Together they had four sons and two daughters:

  • Maria Best (* May 16, 1842 Mette home; † October 3, 1906 Milwaukee ) ∞ 1862 Friedrich ( Frederick) August Pabst (born 28 Mar 1836 Nikolausrieth (now Mönchpfiffel - Nikolausrieth, aging, Thuringia), † 1 Jan. 1904 Milwaukee ). He took over in 1864 half of the Best Brewery of his father, which was later renamed Pabst Brewery Elizabeth F. Pabst (* June 2, 1865 Milwaukee, † 1891)
  • Philip Gustav Pabst (* November 25, 1866 Milwaukee, † 1943) ∞ Sept. 14, 1897 Hilda Lemb ( 1870-1875 *, † 1951), Gustav Philip was president of the brewery of his ancestors of 1904 until 1921.
  • Maria Philippine Pabst (* July 17, 1868 Milwaukee, † 1947) ∞ William Osborne Goodrich (* 1863, † 1956), philanthropist ( benefactor ), bought in 1921 by Charles L. McIntosh ( International Harvester ) built Gothic Villa ( Mansion) in Milwaukee.
