Jacob Druckman

Jacob Druckman Raphael ( born June 26, 1928 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, † 24 May 1996 New Haven, Connecticut) was an American composer and music educator.

Druckman had as a child piano and violin lessons, and studied ten year at Louis Gesensway solfege, harmony and counterpoint. He later took lessons from René Longby and worked fifteen years old as a composer and trumpeter in jazz ensembles. He took part in a composition seminar by Aaron Copland at Tanglewood and studied from 1949 at the Juilliard School with Peter Mennin, and Bernard Wagenaar Vincent Persichetti. In 1953 he studied as a Fulbright scholar at Tony Aubin at the École Normale de Musique in Paris. In 1956 he received his master's degree at the Juilliard School, where he taught from 1957 to 1972. He also taught at Tanglewood and was from 1961 to 1967 teacher at Bard College.

From 1965 worked at the Columbia - Princeton Druckman Electronic Music Center, 1971-72, he was director of the electronic music studio at Yale University, where he was rector in 1976 the Faculty of Music and professor of composition. In 1982 he was resident in music at the American Academy in Rome and composer-in -residence of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. He was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, President of the Fondation Koussevitzky (1980 ) of the Aaron Copland Fund for Music ( 1991).

Druckman composed orchestral works and chamber music, vocal music and electroacoustic music, moreover, drama, film and dance music. For the work of Windows for large orchestra (1972 ) he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. His works have been performed by major American and international orchestras (including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra ) and earned him awards such as the Thorne Foundation Award (1972 ), two Guggenheim Fellowships (1957 and 1968) and the Publication Award from the Society for the Publication of American Music (1967).
