Jacob Hoefnagel

Jacob Hoefnagel (* 1575 in Antwerp, † around 1630 probably in the Netherlands ) was a miniature painter and engraver.

Life and work

The son of Georg Hoefnagel created with Diversae Insectarum Volatium icones ad vivum accuratissimè depictae by celeberrimum pictorem, published by NI Visscher in Amsterdam (1630 ), one of the earliest illustrated works, which dealt only with insects. Hoefnagel also created in 1609 a topographically reasonably accurate view of Vienna. It shows many of the vanished landmarks of the city, such as the Gothic Heiltumstuhl, or Schrannenplatz am Hohen Markt. Due to the viewing direction of the bird's eye view from the north (ie from beyond the Danube ), which corresponds to no corresponding contemporary view from the opposite direction, however, many questions remain unanswered.
