Jacob Matham

Jacob Matham (* October 15 1571 in Haarlem, † January 20, 1631 in Haarlem ) was a Dutch engraver, draftsman and copperplate publisher.

Life

Jacob Matham was stepson and pupil of Hendrick Goltzius ( 1558-1617 ). He was admitted to the painters' guild in 1600, was 1605 Doyen ( chairman ) of the same and died in Haarlem on 20 January 1631. He has a large number of leaves, partly by his own drawings, engraved for the most part by Italian, German and Dutch masters, which, although suffering mannered form of treatment, but have been through the elegant and delicate management of the chisel on the development of copper engraving technique of great influence.

His sons Adriaen, Jan and Theodore were also an engraver.
