Jacob Talmon

Jacob Talmon body ( born June 14, 1916 in Rypin, Poland, † 16 June 1980 in Jerusalem, Israel) was an Israeli historian and professor of contemporary history at the University of Jerusalem. It was filed because of his sharp anti - Marxism which permeates his entire work, as a " Cold War liberal".

Life

Talmon studied the history of totalitarianism, claiming These kinds messianism had emerged from the French Revolution. Here he emphasized the similarities between Jacobinism and Stalinism and coined the terms Totalitarian Democracy and Political Messianism.

Talmon was born in Poland and Jakov body Fleischer in an Orthodox Jewish family. He emigrated in 1934 to study at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, then under British mandate, today in Israel. In 1939 he continued his studies in France, the country had in 1940 but as a result of the French campaign towards London leave. In 1943 he graduated with Ph.D. from the London School of Economics.

In 1957 he was awarded the Israel Prize. His main works are The Origins of Totalitarian Democracy and Political Messianism: The Romantic Phase. Talmon argued that Rousseau's position can best be understood as Totalitarian Democracy. His philosophy understand "only in the target and the attainment of an absolute collective purpose ."

Talmon anti- utopian liberalism has similarities with the political ideas of Karl Popper.
