Jacob van Hoogstraaten

Jacob van Hoogstraten (* 1460 in Hoogstraten in Brabant; † January 21, 1527 in Cologne) was a papal inquisitor at the time of the Reformation.

Hoogstraten studied lions in the liberal arts and Cologne then entered the Dominican Order one. In 1496 he was ordained a priest. 1504 he completed his studies in Cologne from a doctor of theology. In 1507 he became the first rain of the general studies of his Order in Cologne, then prior of the convent there. As the rain he was also professor of theology at the Universitas Studii Coloniensis. As Prior ( 1508), he was also papal judges for the archdioceses of Cologne, Mainz and Trier.

One of his first controversial writings dealt with the work of teaching in Cologne lawyers Peter of Ravenna.

As inquisitor he persecuted Johannes Reuchlin because of his attitude towards the Jews -friendly fonts. In 1514 he ordered the public burning of books by Reuchlin font ophthalmoscope. As Reuchlin then appealed to Pope Leo X., Hoogstraten was rejected and had to process cost ( 1516). Chapter of the Order, he was subsequently relieved of his post as Inquisitor in 1520 but used by the Pope again.

Hoogstraten had to endure some contemporary ridicule, such as in the Epistolae obscurorum virorum. He himself wrote several polemics against Martin Luther, a collection published in 1526.
