Jacob W. Davis

Jacob Davis ( born Jacob Youphes, Latvian Jacob Jufess; * 1834 in Riga, † 1908 in San Francisco) was an American tailor from Reno ( Nevada).

Life

Jacob Davis was in Riga, Latvia (then belonging to the Russian Empire ) was born in 1834. He emigrated in 1850 in the area of ​​San Francisco. He traveled around to secure his livelihood. In 1870 he settled in Reno, where he was Schneider. In addition, he made accessories for cowboys, such as tents and horse blankets. The material for it called Duck, a tough kind cotton, reinforced by copper rivets.

He was asked to make a cheap, durable pant for a plump gentleman who burst again and again from his pants. These pants were ultimately strengthened in the same way, by rivets. In 1871, this was his standard procedure to amplify pants, which was quickly adopted by the competition. Jacob Davis then took contact with Levi Strauss to request a patent because he could not afford even the cost of 68 dollars. Levi Strauss was his fabric supplier for duck and denim. The patent for the jeans was granted in 1873. Levi Strauss is so unlike Jacob Davis became famous.

On request, Jacob Davis began for the Levi Strauss to work Company to coordinate the overseas production of jeans. This he did until his death in 1908, the same year in which the expired patent for the jeans.

His grandson, Ben Davis has established in 1935 the pants brand Ben Davis. These pants are still considered the "Harley -Davidson" under the jeans.
