Jacob Wackernagel

Jacob Wackernagel ( - Stehlin ) ( born December 11, 1853 in Basel, † May 22, 1938 ) was a Swiss linguist and Indo-Europeanist.

Life

Jacob (also: Jakob ) Wackernagel was a son of the German Germanists Wilhelm Wackernagel. He studied from 1871-1875 in his hometown of Basel, in Göttingen and Leipzig in Classical Philology, German and history. The promotion took place in 1875 again in Basel, ibid habilitation in 1876. From 1879-1881 he taught first as associate professor Greek language and literature in Basel, later (1881-1902) as a professor. From 1902 to 1915 he was Professor of Indo-European Linguistics in Göttingen. From 1915 to 1936 he taught Indo-European studies in Basel.

The German Archaeological Institute appointed him on Winckelmannstag 1897 a corresponding member.

Jacob Wackernagel is one of the most important " philological philologist direction ", as he called himself, and his works are still among the most significant of Indo-European Studies.

His only partially of developed estate is preserved at the University Library of Basel.

He was a brother of the historian Rudolf Wackernagel and the father of the folklorist Hans Georg Wackernagel.
