Jacobus Josephus Eeckhout

Jacob Joseph Eeckhout ( born June 2, 1793 in Antwerp, † December 25, 1861 in Paris) was a Belgian painter and lithographer.

Life

At the Academy of his native city, Eeckhout learned modeling and gained 1821 in Brussels the prize in sculpture for his sculpture Death of Cleopatra.

But his inclination led him to painting, and in 1824 won the painting girl, a young man checkmate putting to Ghent the first prize. In 1831 he settled in The Hague and in 1839 director of the Academy there. In 1844 he returned to Belgium in 1859 to Paris, where he died in 1861.

Eeckhout scooped a long time his motives like from the life of Scheveningen fisherman, but later cultivated with fondness the historical genre.
