Jacobus Sinapius

Jakub Horčický z Tepence (also Jacob Horčický of Tepenec; Jakub Horcicky de Tepenec, also Jacobus Sinapius; 1575 * Cesky Krumlov, † 1622 in Prague) was a significant Czech physician, pharmacist and chemist.

Life

He grew up under poor conditions Jakob was taken as a kitchen boy in the Jesuit College in childhood. Once there, his intelligence has been detected, he attended high school and then practiced for two years in a pharmacy. There he learned the handling of chemical procedures, especially the techniques of distillation.

1598, he left Krumlov and spent two years studying physics at the Charles University in Prague. He was also manager of the botanical garden of the Jesuit order in Jindřichův Hradec.

Due to its excellent theoretical knowledge and practical experience with the cultivation, use, and effects of medicinal herbs, he later took over the management of the botanical garden of the Jesuit College in Prague. In this garden Horčický built on medicinal herbs, from which he distilled various tinctures and the so-called treacle. His medicines were very popular and were referred to as " Horčický - water ".

His tinctures should have even Rudolf II freed from a disease that could not be handled by the Hofärzten. Therefore Horčický was appointed private physician of the emperor and appointed senior distillator of the imperial laboratories.

In addition, he was raised on 20 October 1608 Rudolf II to the peerage with the title " of Tepenec ". After the death of Rudolf II in 1612, he worked for some years as manager of the Central Bohemian Castle Melnik. His last years were spent Horčický withdrawn in Prague Jesuit College.

Because entry name is believed that the mysterious Voynich manuscript was temporarily in his possession.
