Jacobus van Egmond

Jacobus Johannes " Jacques " van Egmond ( born February 17, 1908 in Haarlem, North Holland, † January 9, 1969 ) was a Dutch cyclist. In 1932 he became Olympic champion in the sprint.

The track events at the Olympic Games 1932, before almost empty benches in the then 85,000 -seat Rose Bowl played in Pasadena. On August 1, van Egmond stepped up to the 1000 -meter time trial and won silver behind the Australians Edgar Gray. On the same evening he won together with Bernard Leene in the flow of the tandem driving, Leene had won this competition in 1928 along with Daniel van Dijk. On August 2, van Egmond forward and won the quarter-finals in the track sprint. On August 3, the semi-finals and the finals were scheduled in the sprint and in tandem race. Van Egmond won his semi-final in the sprint, but then went to the tandem semi-final not to. In the sprint final of the Frenchman Louis Chaillot won the first race, van Egmond won the next two races and was Olympic champion. 1933 van Egmond was sprint world champion of amateurs in Paris. From 1931 to 1933 he won the Dutch championship in the sprint of the amateurs.

From 1934 to 1940 Jacobus van Egmond was a professional cyclist, but could not achieve a big international success. From 1934 to 1936 he was Dutch champion of the professionals in the sprint.
