The Pont Jacques -Cartier is a five-lane road bridge in the Canadian city of Montreal. It crosses the Saint Lawrence River and connects as part of the inner-city Highway 134, located on the Île de Montréal metropolitan city situated on the southern shore of the city of Longueuil. In the middle of the river it crosses the Île Sainte -Hélène, on which you can reach from the bridge by means of lateral ramps. The bridge was originally called Pont du Havre (English: Harbour Bridge ), and on September 1, 1934 in honor of Jacques Cartier and named the 400th anniversary of his voyage on the St. Lawrence River after him.

History

Discussions on a new bridge in Montreal began in 1874 to relieve the then only bridge connecting Pont Victoria over the St. Lawrence River. It is a still existing railway bridge built in 1860. Any other connections across the river passed only with the help of ferries. The official decision to build the bridge was however only in 1924 like.

The cantilever steel truss bridge follows the architectural concept of the Quebec Bridge. It is architecturally the model of the Story Bridge in Brisbane, Australia, which was completed in 1940. The Dominion Bridge Company began in 1925 with the construction of Pont Jacques- Cartier and completed it in 1930. Having had been handed over to traffic on 14 May of the same year, the bridge of its determination, followed on May 24, an inauguration ceremony. The bridge was originally intended for the transport of trams. The tracks were already installed but never used, so that 1956-1959 the bridge for road transport has been extended. During this work, two Bailey bridges were installed, so traffic could continue to flow smoothly.

From its opening until 1962, the Pont Jacques -Cartier was a toll road. There was the toll gate at its southern ramp. In the premises now an office of Transport Canada is housed, which maintains the bridge. During the years 2001/2002 of the pavement has been completely renewed and spread the verges to 2.40 meters and built a bicycle. In 2004, one special barriers to protect against suicide. Until then, there was an annual average of ten suicides.

In the 2006/2007 season perverted 35.4 million vehicles.

Description
