Jacques Gamelin

Jacques Gamelin ( born October 3, 1738 in Carcassonne, † October 14, 1803 in Carcassonne ) was a French painter, draftsman, engraver and etcher of the early classicism. His works draw on primarily religious and classical themes. In addition, he also painted portraits, battle scenes and genre scenes.

Gamelin first studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in Toulouse under Jean- Pierre Rivalz. Further stations of his artistic training were Paris and Rome, where he was a professor at the Accademia di San Luca worked from 1771. A year later Pope Clement XIV appointed him court painter. In Rome Gamelin also learned the painter Anton Raphael Mengs, with whom he formed a close friendship. 1774 Gamelin returned to France. During the French Revolution, he made portraits of the generals at the front Pyrenees, such as General Dugommier (1800, Perpignan ).
