Jacques Loussier

Jacques Loussier ( born October 26, 1934 in Angers ) is a French pianist and arranger, who is best known for his series of Play Bach.

Life

From the age of ten he took piano lessons. His first Bach piece, a prelude from the Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach, he played to the chagrin of his family, forty, fifty times in a row. "And then it happened; I 've tried small changes, plays around the subject. " This peculiarity as well as the great love of Bach also kept at Jacques Loussier when he left his native city of Angers to study at the Paris Conservatory with Yves Nat.

After the Conservatory, he toured with Romanian gypsies in Cuba Batista did his military service in Algeria, where he incidentally occurred in the Algerian radio, and wrote for TV, film, songs and Others

He became known for his jazzy interpretations of many works of Johann Sebastian Bach. In this unusual combination Loussier 1959, during his studies, after which he founded the Play Bach Trio, with whom he performed these modern interpretations and grossed on records. The ensemble, orchestrated as a piano trio in jazz bassist Pierre Michelot and drummer were Christian Garros. The four Decca albums sold six million copies alone until 1999.

1978 sparked Loussier Trio tour due to high load ( "I 'm tired travel " ) and a willingness to devote his own compositions and the wine on. He retired to his Chateau Miraval in Provence back. Shortly thereafter Loussier set up his own recording studio, where he worked on compositions for acoustic and electric instruments. During this time, among other things, was his "Baroque exhibition of the 21st century " called Lumières. He also collaborated with musicians such as Elton John, Sting, Sade, Steve Winwood and bands like Pink Floyd, Yes and Muse.

In 1985, three hundred years after Bach's birth, he founded the " Play Bach Trio" again with two designated partners in jazz. His companions in this second " Play Bach Trio" were initially Vincent Charbonnier (bass) and André Arpino (drums). As Charbonnier 1997 suffered a stroke, the jazz bassist Benoit Dunoyer de Segonzac took his place. More recently took on Loussier interpretations of compositions by Erik Satie, Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, Antonio Vivaldi and others.

On 28 July 2004, the trio played under the MDR Music Summer concert of selected pieces by Bach, Debussy, etc. in the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig.

Film

Loussier composed music for over 67 films and series, the soundtrack, including the theme music for the popular French series Thierry La Fronde and the music for the British war film Katanga (1968).

Jacques Loussier 2010 was awarded for his lifetime the German Jazz Trophy. A Life for Jazz.

Others

Glenn Gould, the legendary Bach interpreter, is said to have said about Loussier once: " Play Bach is a good way to play Bach ."
