Jacques Rogge

Jacques, Count Rogge KCMG ( born 2 May 1942 in Ghent) is a Belgian orthopedic surgeon and sports official. From 2001 to 2013 he was president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Lausanne ( Switzerland ).

Life

After his school education at the Sint- Barbara College, a Jesuit college in Ghent Savaanstraat, Jacques Rogge attended the University of Ghent, where he received his doctorate in orthopedic surgery. He took in the years 1968, 1972 and 1976 in part in sailing at the Olympic Summer Games. He reached 14th place as best result in 1972 in the Finn dinghy. He also played for the Belgian national rugby team.

In 1991 he became a member of the IOC and president of the Belgian National Olympic Committee. On 16 July 2001 he was elected at the 112th plenary meeting of the IOC in Moscow as successor of Juan Antonio Samaranch, initially for eight years for the eighth President of the IOC. The 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City were his first as IOC president. Also in 2002, he was raised by the Belgian King Albert II to the peerage, his title is that of a Comte (French) or Graaf ( Dutch).

One of the key points of his policy was to limit the number of Olympians to 10,000. He also campaigned against the progressive gigantism in construction projects and the commercialization.

October 9, 2009 Jacques Rogge was re-elected at the 121st General Assembly of the IOC in Copenhagen for a four-year second term as IOC president. A reelection in 2013 was not provided for by the statutes of the IOC. The German Thomas Bach was elected to Rogge's successor.

Jacques Rogge is married and has two adult children.
