Controversies and decommissioning

The then opposition party in the Council of Jaén, the Popular Party, launched a major campaign against the construction of the tram in the city, accompanied by a signature collection. It was also criticized that planning has not been extended in the direction of the Southern periphery - to San Felipe, El Tomillo and Glorieta - which are even more cut off from the center and the expansion area. In contrast, emphasized the Government of Andalusia, that the tram will mean a new impulse for the city of Jaén.

Since the Partido Popular, the absolute majority of the votes gained in the local elections on May 22, 2011 the opening of the operational tram was politically prevented. On 15 July 2013, the city council finally decided not to take the tram in operation.
