Jagdalpur (Hindi जगदलपुर, Jagdalpur ) is a city in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh with about 125,000 inhabitants ( 2011 census ). It is the administrative seat of the district of Bastar and was formerly the capital of the former princely state of Bastar.

Geography

The city is on the river Indravati, a tributary of the Godavari.

Attractions

  • The Chitrakot waterfall on Indravati is the widest waterfall in India, and is therefore also called Indian Niagara.
  • The Danteshwari Temple is about 80 km from Jagdalpur and is the temple of Danteshwari, a local goddess who is worshiped as an incarnation of Shakti.
  • The Kailash and Kotumsar caves are caves which are about 2 km deep. They are located about 40 km from Jagdalpur away.
  • The Tiratgarh Waterfall is located in the Kanger - Ghati National Park, 35 km. south-west of Jagdalpur. The step-shaped waterfall has a height of approximately 91 m. The Kanger - Ghati National Park is located near the Kholaba River. In this park can be seen, among other things, the rare Großkantschil.
  • The Bastar Palace in Jagdalpur was the seat of the ruler of the kingdom of Bastar. The royal family of Bastar still lives in this palace.
