Jahorina

Jahorina ( Cyrillic Јахорина ) is a mountain range in the east of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It extends from Trebevic on the southern outskirts of Sarajevo, 30 kilometers to the valley cut Praça northwest of Gorazde. Jahorina is a part of the Dinaric mountain system. Its highest point is the Sjeništa with 1913 m. i J.

The western part of the mountains is protected as a National Park Jahorina.

Geography

The mountain of Jahorina is bounded to the northwest from Sarajevo Polje and the River Miljacka. At the Vitez - pass east of the Pale Mountains turns into Romanija. The boundary to the north and east forms the canyon Praça; in the south are the valleys of the Drina and Bistrica. In the West, Jahorina is separated by the Željeznica Valley from the solid Bjelašnica.

History

The western foothills of the Jahorina formed during the war in Bosnia, strategic attack positions for the artillery troops of the Republika Srpska during the siege of Sarajevo. Almost during the entire war period, the mountain was hard fought; still large areas are mined.

The boundary between the Republika Srpska and the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina passes through the mountains.

Traffic

All major transport links bypass the Jahorina mountains in the north or south. Thus, the main road 5 (Sarajevo- Visegrad ) and the route of the former Bosnian Eastern Railway to Belgrade utilize the valleys of Miljacka and Praca, while the highway M18 (Sarajevo- Foca - Nikšić ) runs through the southern valleys of the Željeznica and Bistrica.

Winter sports

1955, the second Winter Universiade took place here. During the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo Jahorina was a competition venue, among other things used for the competitive alpine skiing women. Prior to a modest tourism infrastructure in the mountains was built, which, however, currently can only be used limited due to the precarious situation of mine. Many ski slopes, however, were released in the past few years. Jahorina is in the winter is good snow, in the top layers is usually more than a meter of snow.
