Jai Uttal

Douglas " Jai " Uttal ( born June 12, 1951 in New York City ) is an American fusion interpreted musician (vocals, harmonium, guitar, sarod, banjo), the Indian -influenced world music.

Life and work

Uttal learned from the age of 7 years classical piano; later, the banjo, the guitar and the harmonica were added. At age 17, he discovered the Indian music that touched him deeply. Nineteen year old he moved to California to study with Ali Akbar Khan Sarod. Later, he lived for a time in India, where he became familiar with the practice of Sankirtangesangs. His first album, Footprints, he laid before 1991 on Triloka Records; because the trumpeter Don Cherry and the singer Lakshmi Shankar participated. More albums followed in the next few years with his Pagan Love Orchestra, which involved musicians such as Peter Apfelbaum, Peck Allmond and Steve Gorn. His album Shiva Station (1997) was mixed by Bill Laswell.
