Jaime Torres Bodet

Jaime Torres Bodet ( born April 17, 1902 in Mexico City, † 1974 ) was a Mexican politician.

The professor of French literature, poet, writer and diplomat was at the time of his election to the 3rd General Conference of UNESCO, 1948 in Beirut, Foreign Minister of Mexico. His exceptional, and personal use as education secretary of the Government of Mexico (1943-1946) against illiteracy in his country had made him particularly well known. For the objectives of UNESCO, he had been involved for his participation in the founding conference in London in 1945.

He devotes special attention to the fundamental issues. Drawing on his diplomatic experience and with reference to the objectives of the 1948 adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, he tried to reconcile the interests of the economically less developed Member States with those of the developed countries in line.

On the 5th General Conference 1950 in Florence he worked to having regard to the military budgets of the Member States for a significant household growth. The organization should then be able to use their program as an effective contribution to world peace. The exaggerations in the East-West conflict was Bodet countered by a balanced program. When he looked at the General Conference in 1952 rigorous budget restrictions against, Bodet resigned from his position as general manager back. In 1971 he was awarded the Medalla del Senado de la Belisario Domínguez República.
