Joujouka, Jajouka or Zahjouka (Arabic جوجوكة or جهجوكة ǧūǧūka ) is a village in the Ahl- Srif mountains of the southern Rif Mountains in Morocco.

Townscape

Subsistence farming is the main activity of the population of Joujouka. The main products are next to the sheep farming olives, carrots, beets, potatoes and honey. The women take care of the poultry. During the summer, the boys tend the sheep further up in the mountains.

The musical heritage

Joujouka is internationally known as the home of the Master Musicians of Jajouka traditional Sufimusiker of Bachir Attar and who has entered this music in the world music. The village culture in the 1950s drew the attention of the writer Paul Bowles and William S. Burroughs on, since it contains strong elements of trance. Brion Gysin, which was presented to the musicians, promoted this idea and they rested on the village Boujeloud Festival, in which a young man danced in a goatskin to the music. 1967 and 1968 visited Brian Jones, the co-founder of the Rolling Stones, the village and took to the musician. From the tapes, the LP Brian Jones Presents The Pipes Of Pan At Joujouka, which appeared psychedelic mixed 1971 Rolling Stones Records was formed. This publication made ​​for the first time the music of the internationally renowned ensembles and other musicians, including Ornette Coleman and Robert Palmer, and later Bill Laswell attention that occurred or recordings with the musicians of the village. In September 2013 appeared in Howe Records compilation The Road to Jajouka, on the remixed music of the Master Musicians and was reinterpreted.
