Jake Garn

Edwin Jacob " Jake" Garn ( born October 12, 1932 in Richfield, Utah ) is a retired American politician ( Republican). He was from 1974 to 1993 member of the U.S. Senate for Utah and the first politician who flew into space with a space shuttle.

Life

Yarn received in 1955 a Bachelor in Business and Finance from the University of Utah. He was a pilot in the United States Navy and at the Utah Air National Guard. In April 1979, he retired with the rank of brigadier general. From 1972 to 1975 Yarn was mayor of Salt Lake City. In 1974 he was elected as the successor of not more candidates Wallace F. Bennett for the first time in the Senate. In the office of the senator he was 21 December 1974 to 3 January 1993. As chairman of the Senate banking committee was co-author of Yarn yarn -St. Germain Depository Institutions Act of 1982, a law on deregulation of savings banks in the United States, the end of the 1980s led to the Savings -and -loan crisis. After retiring from the Senate, he was Deputy Chairman of Huntsman Chemical Corp.. in Salt Lake City.

Astronauts activity

STS -51- E

The flight STS -51- E of the Challenger was canceled due to problems of the IUS upper stage. It should have been exposed to a TDRS satellite. As the occupying Karol Bobko, Donald Williams, Rhea Seddon, David Griggs, Jeffrey Hoffman, the French payload specialist Patrick Baudry and politicians Jake Garn were provided.

STS -51- D

On April 12 In 1985 yarn as a payload specialist aboard the space shuttle Discovery on mission STS -51- D into space. Payload were the two satellites TELESAT -9 and LEASAT - third In the latter, however, the automatic startup of the antenna and the engine did not work. After his return, he was co-authored a book titled Night Launch. It was released in 1989 and is about the kidnapping of a space shuttle by terrorists.

Jake Garn is married for the second time and has from the first marriage and four from the second marriage two children and a stepson.
