Jakob Gapp

Jakob Gapp ( born July 26, 1897 in Wattens, Tyrol; † August 13, 1943 in Berlin- Plotzensee ) was an Austrian priest in the resistance against National Socialism.

Life

Jakob Gapp came from a factory worker's family. In Hall in Tirol, he attended the Franciscan school. He volunteered for the First World War at the Tyrolean Standschützen. In 1916, he was wounded; November 6, 1918, he came in captivity, from which he returned home on 14 August 1919.

On 13 August 1920 he entered the Order of the Marianists. His novitiate he graduated on the Greisinghof at Pregarten. In 1930 he was ordained a priest. After that, he was a teacher and prefect in marianum Freistadt. Later he moved to Graz in the Marie Institute.

He leaned Nazism decisively and made no secret of this view. 1938 teaching ban was given to him, which he in 1939 went into exile, first to Bordeaux, then to Spain.

In 1942 he was lured and arrested over the border to France. On July 2, 1943 Jakob Gapp was sentenced in Berlin for "treason " to death. On 13 August 1943, he was beheaded in Plotzensee.

Rehabilitation and assessment

In 1996, the death sentence against Jacob Gapp in Berlin was lifted. On November 24, 1996 he was beatified in Rome by Pope John Paul II. His feast day is day of his death, August 13.

Since 1996 there has been in Wattens the " Father -Jakob Gapp - Way of the Cross " located between the municipalities and Wattenberg Wattens. Other memorials in Wattens are the bust and plaque in the church of St. Lawrence and the plaque commemorating his birthplace. The house of the youth, which is owned by the parish Wattens, Wattens was in was renamed " Jakob Gapp Youth House ". In Hall in the Franciscan school is a memorial plaque to the Blessed. The play way and that is dedicated to the life, death and dealing with the memory of Jakob Gapp in Wattens.

It takes place annually on 25 July a memorial pilgrimage of Wattens on the Umlberg (municipality Terfens ) instead. In Greisinghof in Tragwein a memorial was erected. The farewell letter and the profession ring by Jakob Gapp are the most valuable exhibits. The Father -Jakob Gapp Prize is a award of the Diocese of Innsbruck, idealistic and financially generous prize. In 2011 on the occasion of 15 years beatification concerts and church services held in Wattens.

Relics of Blessed are located in the chapel of the Meeting House in Innsbruck.

He is one of the saints of the Catholic Worker movement in Tyrol.
