Jakob Meiland

Meiland Jacob (* 1542 in Senftenberg, † December 31, 1577 in Hechingen ) was a German composer of the 16th century.

Life

Meiland came as a choirboy to Dresden and received an education here in Dresden Hofkantorei. 1558 he moved to the University of Leipzig. He then went on study trips to Italy and Flanders. 1563 he was employed at the court of the Margrave George Frederick of Brandenburg in Ansbach as Kapellmeister. On January 22, 1565, he married Clara in Nuremberg Marschalin. With her he had two children, Dorothy and Ursula. After 1568 Meiland was commissioned by the Marquis in Stuttgart, Meissen and Munich offices to recruit Boys Choir among others. In 1571 he fell ill and dangerous was maintained by his old patron Margrave Georg Friedrich. Meiland moved with his family to Frankfurt am Main. Despite his activities as a composer, the family was destitute. From 1576 to 1577 he was court organist in Celle near William the Younger, the father of Georg Friedrich. During this tenure, he wrote numerous songs with mostly sad lyrics. Subsequently he was employed in Hechingen, Hohenzollern - Hechingen as the county court music, where he died in 1577.
