Jakob Rosanes

Jacob Rosanes (also: Jakob Rosanes; born August 13, 1842 in Brody, Galicia, † January 6, 1922 in Breslau) was a German mathematician and chess master. As a high school teacher in Breslau he worked on invariant theory and algebraic geometry.

Life

Born into a Sephardic family, Rosanes visited the ( German -language ) high school in Brody. For the purposes of the father he learned from 1856 to 1858 in a Breslauer trading house. After two years of preparation for study at the Friedrich -Wilhelms- University of Breslau from 1860 he studied chemistry. Under the influence of Heinrich Schröter he turned to mathematics and physics. His teachers included Rudolf Lipschitz, Paul Bachmann, Oskar Emil Meyer and Ferdinand Joachimsthal ( 1818-1861 ). After temporarily at the Friedrich- Wilhelms- University of Berlin, he habilitated in 1870 in Breslau. In 1873 he was awarded a professorship and in 1876 the chair of mathematics.
