Jama Ali Jama

Jama Ali Jama was unilaterally appointed in 2001 as President of Puntland declared autonomy for the north -west Somalia.

Political life

After expiry of the term of President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed, who had not recognized internationally, Puntland declared independence from Somalia, the council of elders of Puntland demanded new elections. On 14 November 2001 he chose Jama Ali Jama from Boosaaso new president.

Yusuf, however, did not acknowledge his successor. He retired first to Gaalkacyo back to May 2002 at the head of loyal troops into the capital of Puntland, Garoowe to return and declare themselves against the President. In the same year he took a well Jamas stronghold Boosaaso, whereupon Jama temporarily in unilaterally withdrew after Qardho and in the Sanaag region declared independent Somaliland. Clashes between Yusuf and Jama lasted until 2003. Jama Ali Jama was supported by the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia, Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed of Ethiopia and the SRRC. In May 2003, Yusuf signed with Muse Hersi Mohamud Jama's deputy, a peace agreement.
