James Avery (musician)

James Avery ( born in 1937 in Hutchinson ( Kansas), † March 8, 2009 ) was an American- German pianist and conductor, who was primarily known as a performer of new music.

1980-2002 he was - as the successor of Edith Picht - Axenfeld - Professor of Piano at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg, then to 2004 lecturer. With colleagues and students In 1992 he founded the ensemble SurPlus.

As a soloist, chamber musician, and ensemble leader, he interpreted, inter alia, works by Stefan Wolpe, Morton Feldman, Brian Ferneyhough, Mathias Spahlinger and Claus- Steffen Mahnkopf.
