James Berkeley, 1st Baron Berkeley

James Berkeley, 1st Baron Berkeley (c. 1394; † October 22, 1463 ), was an English nobleman and politician.

Origin and family environment

James Berkeley in 1421 was appointed a baron by writ after his uncle Thomas de Berkeley, 5th Baron Berkeley (first ceremony ) had died in 1417 without male heirs.

Although James inherited Berkeley Berkeley Castle, but not the title of Baron Berkeley, he could not inherit because this Barony was claimed by the daughter of the last baron, the Countess of Warwick. Although the crown went over this claim the Countess, James de Berkeley said, but only Berkeley Castle. But a new Writ of Summons, which made James Berkeley 1st Baron Berkeley (second award ) and whose descendants carry this item to compensate for the non- claim the title of the award of King Henry V in 1295 issued on October 20, 1421 today.

Baron Berkeley in 1426 received the accolade of King Henry VI. , For he was a faithful follower of the house of Lancaster. So he took to 1461 regularly to the parliaments of the Kings Henry V and Henry VI. part, but was appointed by King Edward IV also. The 1st Baron Berkeley, died in Berkeley Castle in November 1463rd He was married four times. His son William Berkeley (1426-1492) inherited the castle and title of 2nd Baron Berkeley.
