James Brice

James Brice ( born August 26, 1746 Annapolis, Maryland, † July 11, 1801 ibid ) an American politician, and in 1792 was the third Governor of the State of Maryland.

Early years and political rise

James Brice studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1765. He then practiced among others, Baltimore. In addition to his legal work, he was also a wealthy planters with large land holdings. Since 1777 to 1799 he served on the advisory board of Governors of Maryland. In Anne Arundel County, he was 1777-1779 tax commissioner.

More career

From 1780 to 1792 he was several times with interruptions in the City Council of Annapolis. In the years 1782 to 1783 and again from 1787 to 1788 he was mayor of that city. In addition, he served there from 1784 until his death in 1801 as treasurer. James Brice was one of the electors who voted for President George Washington. After the death of Governor George Plater on February 10, 1792 Brice was acting governor of his state. This office he held only until the election of a new governor. Then, after Thomas Lee was chosen Brice gave him the office on 5 April 1792. He has held office less than two months as governor. James Brice died in July 1801 in Annapolis. With his wife Julianna Jennings he had six children.
