James Buffington

Lawrence James "Jimmy" Buffington ( born May 15, 1922 in Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania, † 20 July 1981 in Englewood, New Jersey ) was an American jazz horn player. He became famous for his play in the bands of Gil Evans, Quincy Jones and Oliver Nelson.

Life and work

Self-taught, played Buffington Flugelhorn since his school days. In 1954, he began with Mel Powell, Teddy Charles Tentet 1956. During this time he was at the Third Stream recordings of Gunther Schuller, John Lewis, George Russell and Charles Mingus ( Music for Brass, 1956; Modern Jazz Concert, 1957) involved.
