James Burrill, Jr.

James Burrill, Jr. ( born April 25, 1772 in Providence, Rhode Iceland, † December 25, 1820 in Washington DC ) was an American politician ( Federalist Party), who represented the state of Rhode Iceland in the U.S. Senate.

James Burrill graduated in 1788 at Rhode Iceland College in his hometown of Providence, today's Brown University. He studied law, was in 1791 a member of the Bar Association and worked as a lawyer in Providence. From 1797 to 1814, he served as Attorney General of the State of Rhode Iceland, the House of Representatives he belonged 1813-1816, including three years as Speaker. 1816 Burrill was appointed chief judge of Rhode Iceland.

In the same year he was elected to the U.S. Senate, moved into the James Burrill on 4 March 1817. As a result, he was, among other things before the Senate Judiciary Committee. However, he died later during his tenure on December 25, 1820 in Washington. For Burrill honor a memorial service was held in the meeting room of the Senate; the burial took place at the Congress Cemetery.

The town of Burrillville, Rhode Iceland was named after James Burrill. His great-grandson, Theodore F. Green represented the state of 1937-1961 also in the U.S. Senate; Previously, he was its governor from 1933 to 1937.
