James Chapman (explorer)

James Chapman ( * December 27, 1831 in Cape Town, † February 4, 1872 in Du Toit's Pan, South Africa ) was an English explorer of Africa.

Chapman came to Natal in 1840, from where he undertook trade and hunting trips into the interior (South African Republic and the Betschuanenländer ). Several times he visited Lake Ngami, where he discovered the great salt pans in which the outflow, Suga loses. In 1855 he went from there to Walvis Bay. In 1860 he undertook an expedition to the Victoria Falls. From there, he wanted to reach the Indian Ocean on the Zambezi River. The purpose- built vehicle accident but Chapman returned in 1863 and back to Walvis Bay.
